Welcome to the accounting discipline at Montgomery College! Our curriculum is designed to prepare you for a successful career in accounting by focusing your studies on one of three principal Accounting Career Pathways:

Whether you pursue work in public accounting as a CPA, in corporate enterprises, nonprofit organizations, or government agencies (including OPM Series 510 for U.S. federal positions), Montgomery College can help with your academic preparation.

Degrees and Certificate

Montgomery College offers three programs to prepare you for accounting work depending on your principal goal and previous education. Follow the links below to learn more about the programs, related career pathways, and how each program will support your goal.

The MC Business Associate of Arts (60 credits) new window is for students who have graduated from high school but have never earned a college or university degree, and want to transfer to a four-year institution (like UMD, Towson, or UMGC) to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting. For students at the beginning of their academic journey, it is the preferred program for building a long-term career in accounting. Students are encouraged to work with an MC advisor and contact their preferred transfer institution to ensure their credits will transfer.

MC’s Accounting Certificate (30 credits) is designed for students who wish to develop a foundation in accounting or build on their bachelor’s degree to include accounting coursework. The credits can be applied to the Accounting Associate of Applied Science (below) and are appropriate for students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree in another area of study and want to pivot into accounting, potentially becoming eligible to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination and potentially becoming licensed in Maryland. Students are encouraged to talk with an MC advisor regarding their goals, prior education, and credit transferability.

The MC Accounting Associate of Applied Science (60 credits) is for students seeking direct entry into the workforce. Students will gain hands-on experience and practical skills through coursework focused on entry-level roles when a CPA designation is not required. The program also offers individuals the foundation to run their own businesses. This program is not intended for transfer. Students should meet with an Advisor to discuss their personal and academic goals.
