Montgomery College has received approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to offer a new associate of applied science (A.A.S.) degree in accounting, creating an affordable, career-focused pathway for students seeking immediate entry into one of the region’s most in-demand professions.

The new 60-credit program was developed by Montgomery College accounting faculty and aligns with Maryland’s educational requirements for the accounting profession while reflecting current industry standards and workforce needs. Students will gain hands-on experience and practical skills through coursework focused on corporate, government and nonprofit accounting, while preserving opportunities for students who later transfer to four-year institutions and pursue public accounting careers.

The program arrives as employers continue to face a nationwide shortage of accounting professionals. According to labor market data cited in the College’s proposal, Maryland is projected to add more than 2,400 accounting and auditing openings annually, while employers across the Washington metropolitan region currently advertise thousands of accounting-related positions.

"Organizations across every sector—from businesses and nonprofit organizations to government agencies—need accounting professionals with strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills," said Dr. Kathryn Klose, collegewide accounting coordinator. "This new degree provides students with an affordable pathway to develop those skills and enter a profession that continues to offer strong demand, competitive salaries and opportunities for advancement."

The accounting A.A.S is designed for students seeking direct entry into the workforce rather than a transfer pathway. Graduates will be prepared for positions including accounting clerk, bookkeeper, accounts payable or accounts receivable specialist, payroll technician, tax preparer and other entry-level accounting roles.

The curriculum incorporates both traditional accounting principles and emerging industry practices, including business analytics, accounting information systems, data analysis, cybersecurity awareness and financial technologies. Students will also gain experience using industry-standard software and tools commonly used by employers.

"Accounting is evolving rapidly," Klose said. "Today's employers are looking for professionals who understand not only accounting fundamentals but also how technology, data analytics and business intelligence tools support decision-making. We designed this program with those expectations in mind."

The degree also creates a seamless pathway for students currently enrolled in the Montgomery College accounting certificate program, with certificate credits applying directly toward completion of the associate degree. Within one year of implementation, the College plans to make the program available through early college and dual enrollment pathways, expanding opportunities for Montgomery County high school students to begin preparing for accounting careers while earning college credit. The accounting A.A.S. will be offered beginning in fall 2026.
