
Alumni Association Board of Governors
The Montgomery College Alumni Board of Governors is dedicated to advancing our alumni community's personal, educational, and professional growth. Board of Governors members are expected to:
- Actively participate by serving on a board committee and attending three full-board meetings a year;
- Serve as an ambassador to the greater community and beyond, promoting the College and Alumni Association to prospective students and their parents, fellow alumni and the general public;
- Actively recruit new members and donors to the Alumni Association and encourage further participation at Montgomery College through volunteerism;
- Encourage alumni and friends to volunteer and/or make a gift to the College;
- Attend at least one signature Montgomery College or Alumni Association event a year
Each May, the Alumni Association Board elects new members and officers to the Board of Governors. Please contact the Alumni Office if you have questions and would like to get involved.
Board of Governors
Dawn Potosky ’80, President Ms. Potosky is a retired professional photographer in the Washington metropolitan area. She has been actively involved with the Alumni Association since 2017. During her time with the Association, she has contributed to the scholarships and events committees, playing a key role in raising funds for Association-awarded scholarships. She and her husband, Artie Burns, have a scholarship, the Burns Potosky Family Endowed Scholarship, that supports MC students with an interest in art. She is the Association’s President.
Anita Neal Powell ’79, Vice PresidentMs. Powell is president and CEO of the Lincoln Park Historical Foundation. She is an author of several publications on local history and served on the Rockville Historic District Commission, which conferred historic status on Carver Junior College, a sister institution to Montgomery College that operated in the 1950s. She has chaired the Association’s bylaws and nominating committees and is currently chair of the executive committee. She is the Association’s First Vice President.
Patrick Sasu Jr. ‘23, Second Vice PresidentMr. Sasu Jr. ‘23 has a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Maryland Global Campus. He currently works at TopRight Partners, a brand activation and consulting agency, as their account coordinator. As a student at MC, he volunteered as an MC Votes Ambassador and successfully advocated for on-campus ballot box sites at the College. He is the Association’s Second Vice President.
Jon Pointer ’89, Immediate Past PresidentMr. Pointer has been a swimming pool manager in Germantown and adjunct faculty member for 38 years. He has led the Association’s finance and executive committees and is the Association’s Immediate Past President.
Remy Alvarez ’15Ms. Alvarez is a marketing professional. After graduating from MC, she received a bachelor’s degree from Towson University and a master’s degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She has volunteered at the Dogfishing for MC Scholarships fundraiser and is chair of the Association’s scholarships committee.
Amivi Atsu ‘20Ms. Atsu received a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2024 from the University of Baltimore. She currently works at PwC as an accountant and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) candidate. She frequently volunteers with the Junior Achievement program, helping young people learn more about how to manage their money.
Richard Beall ’71Mr. Beall is retired from higher education, where he served in career services for over 25 years and became vice president for external relations. He is a past president of the Association and served as the first chair of its mentoring program. He has also served on the scholarships committee and guided a new-member engagement project for the Board of Governors.
Liz Brandenburg ’08Ms. Brandenburg retired from MC as biology lab coordinator in 2014 after 45 years at the College and 15 years as president of the AFSCME local staff union. She has chaired the Association’s mentoring and legislative committees.
Stephen Campanella ’76Mr. Campanella retired as a master carpenter in the Theatre Arts program at Rockville in 2008 after working at MC for 36 years. His scholarship, the Campanella Technical Theatre Scholarship, supports students enrolled in the Summer Dinner Theatre program. He has served on the Association’s nominating committee.
Carole Carlson ’94Ms. Carlson has served as the director of finance and administration at the Rights and Resources Initiative in Washington, D.C. since 2017. She has a 20-plus year career in public accounting, specializing in nonprofit auditing and consulting. She is a past president of the Association.
Maureen Feely-Kohl ’86Ms. Feely-Kohl staffed the Takoma Park/Silver Spring art department until her retirement in 2017. She has chaired the Association’s nominating committee and supported the Mobile Masterpieces fundraiser, and she currently serves on the events committee.
Maureen Jones ’94Ms. Jones studied at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring and Rockville Campuses, earning a degree in Paralegal / General Studies. She has over twenty-five years of financial industry experience. She is a volunteer with the events committee, assisting with the Dogfishing for MC Scholarships fundraiser.
Beri Kari-Fonge ’05Ms. Kari-Fonge is a nursing instructor for Workforce Development and Continuing Education and is active in promoting the Association’s Nursing Chapter among her fellow nursing alumni. She serves on the mentoring committee and is the Nursing Chapter’s liaison to the Board of Governors.
Genevieve Montgomery ’13Ms. Montgomery is the assistant director of leadership annual giving for The Catholic University of America. She has volunteered in the Alumni Office and has assisted in outreach to members for project planning. She is the past chair of the Association’s legislative committee.
Sofia Perez ‘25Ms. Perez served as president of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Student Government Association, a Philanthropy Board member, PIC-MC Student Board member, and a student of the Southern Management Leadership Program. She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Timothy Pulliam ’90Mr. Pulliam recently retired as a senior executive at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, leading their Division of Facilities and Security. He has chaired the Association’s mentoring committee, pairing alumni volunteers with current students to enhance their learning environment.
Alona Hapey ‘18Ms. Hapey graduated with an M.S. in Business Management and Marketing Analytics (BMMA) from the University of Maryland Robert H. School of Business in ’22. She specializes in marketing research, digital marketing, data analytics, and product management. As an active member of the Alumni Association’s marketing committee, she provides strategic guidance and collaborates with board members on fundraising and community outreach initiatives.
Steve Simon ‘81Mr. Simon previously served as vice president of the Board of Governors. He is a “semi-retired” communications professional who spent most of his four decades in the field working in a variety of public and private sector roles within Montgomery County. He was MC’s director of communications from 1999-2008.
Lori Thomas ’99Ms. Thomas is a retired weight loss coach and former administrative assistant for the George B. Thomas Sr. Learning Academy. She has led Association projects including the Dogfish Head Alehouse, Springfield Manor, and Mobile Masterpieces fundraisers, and is a past president of the Association. She chairs the events committee.
Suzanne Thompson ’82Ms. Thompson is a retired financial aid administrator for Capitol Technology University. She has served on several Association committees and projects, including programming, events, and mentoring.
Madison Vital ‘21Ms. Vital is a seasoned legal professional and dedicated community leader with over a decade of experience advocating for justice, equity, and opportunity. As a student, her sustained support and advocacy helped secure increased funding for MC, ensuring affordable tuition and the successful construction of the Leggett Building.
Lucy Vitaliti ’77 Dr. Vitaliti is a student-life professional focusing on service-learning opportunities at MC. She works as a student employment specialist at the Rockville Campus. She is a past President of the Association and supported the Leggett Legacy Forward event in Fall 2018.
Mariam Yaldram ‘16Ms. Yaldram is a special education teacher at Ingenuity Prep in Washington, D.C., a corps member with Teach for America D.C. region, and a peer mentor at Fulbright Lotus. In her free time, Mariam volunteers as a member of the UMBC Alumni Board of Directors and as the secretary for Fulbrighters with Disabilities.
